I’m in the US. Thank you Professor. Your analysis gives me hope, as does Canada’s turn to the world stage. The confrontation in this country between typical Americans & America’s oligarchs was probably inevitable, certainly overdue. Much of Trump’s cult are the result of misplaced anger, as you note. It’s easier to attack “those people” than to confront the enormous power that’s been accumulating.

It was a long term plan by the right wing authoritarians, manifested at last in Project 2025 & boosted since Reagan, by Reagan, then Fox, then social media. It’s too bad it took the rise of such a destructive gang led by Trump for so many Americans to catch on. Actually publishing Project 2025 helped. While the Democratic Party seems mostly at loose ends, solidarity is building & there may be a chance to beat back this oligarchical behemoth, with either a rebuilt Dem party or one that is left behind. In fact, maybe both too solidly entrenched parties can & will be left behind. And that would be a good thing

“Those people” are those who have been accumulating power. The professional managerial class, the NGO’s imposing medical tyranny and helping migrants break the law and discriminating against native populations. “Those people” are the enemy. The President of Harvard and the head of the Department of Education being professionally useless leftist women who hate half the country is much worse than Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk making money from building constructive companies.

I believe the fight for renewed liberal democracy should include fight against the business model used in education, medicine and politics : “making a deal” is inappropriate anywhere except for some short term deals. As retired physician, I shudder at the business like delivery of medical care in the US.

:Canada, for example, which once seemed – in the nicest possible way – somewhat peripheral to world affairs, comfortably tucked up there between a friendly America and a frozen Arctic, now suddenly looks like a frontline state" Yes, and it is otherworldly and a little bit scary to suddenly have so many eyes on us!

The kind of message we need in this dark times. Thank you very much.

Liberalism (decentralized politics ) and markets (decentralized economics) work not because they offer “perfect” solutions but because of their ability to adapt to an ever changing world. Autocrats sooner or later failed because they think they can order the waves to stop…

Europe should be more upfront in its defence of Ukraine. It is hard to believe that Starmer and Reeve believe they will get the first trade deal between Britain and America in 250 years out of Trump. The European defence industry should be working at full power to arm Ukraine with the weapons it needs to prevent further incursions by the Russian military into Ukraine.

Exactly. Trumpism-Putinism is not some sort of isolation, anti-Globalsim. They are global authoritarian takeover, Putin, Xi and Trump had long came to terms that they have to destroy democracies everywhere.

That's why all normal people, not only liberals, have to unite.

Australia proves that free trade can be successful.

Our election result also proves that liberalism is not dead, since Albanese Labor is a centre party that promotes liberal policies.

In contrast, our so-called Liberal Party is now a conservative party, and has been shunned by voters.

Europe must become the world leader in liberalism, now that Trump's America is a failed democracy and an oligarchy, like Russia.

Thanks, strong stuff. I do agree that liberalism, while meaning well, has set up some toxic problems that do need to be openly discussed and addressed.

Carney is a member of a party that debanked peaceful protestors who then Prime Minister Trudeau disagreed with. That is not liberal. Left wingers need to take criticism seriously. Discriminating against majority populations, tearing down history, mass migration, mandating invasive health procedures. Conservatives like me just do not abide that. We see you as the enemy, anyone who has promoted this. A tip for Mr. Ash and other left wing scolds and “conditioners” of the public- Act liberal and we will respect you. Behave like Trudeau and Von Der Leyen and Keir Starmer and we will fight you till the end.

Lo que nos hace falta a los liberales del mundo es un ejército armado. Los autócratas tienen ejércitos armados.
